Statement
The palimpsest of cultures whose traces are everywhere in Greece
has long intrigued me as a theme for painting. The trigger came
when the coach taking us to Delphi stopped on the way at Macdonalds.
The structure of "Overwrite" is based on the composition of the
West Pediment at Olympia, but within these forms uses elements from
Minoan wall-painting, Classical sculpture and vase-painting, Byzantine
mosaic and the Greek landscape. The Macdonalds logo cuts across
the lot. Most of my work takes its starting-point from landscape,
often from the colours and shapes found in rock, water, and the
shifting edges between them.
