oil painings and charcoal drawings

The charcoal pieces are a synthesis of visual stimuli (e.g. photos
of deep space, skin texture, archaelogical sites) and my own mark-making
(many previous drawings had the generic title 'spoor'). The central
white circles are made by erasure, to puncture the illusionistic
surface. My paintings are made of many layers of thin glazes to
maximise their illusionistic depth. Painted discs, cut-outs (as
in 'Bright Reds' and 'Yellow')and compass-drawn circles of thick
paint again penetrate the surface to reassert the literal reality
of the painting.
