Paul Tonkin was born in 1951 and has been painting for over 30
years. His pictures depend on subtle variations in colour, the "twisting
of local colour" noted by Tim Hilton in the Guardian, which
can rarely be conveyed photographically. The same critic observed
in another review, "Paul Tonkin's colour is positively Venetian"
and John Russell Taylor, in the Times, has compared him with Ivon
Hitchens.
The paintings exploit the fluid and translucent properties of acrylic
paint using interlocking and floating forms which are often of a
biomorphic character, the intention being to bring out the 'musical'
effect of differing chromatic intensities in dynamic combination.
The sometimes unusual formats used are suitable for either domestic
or workplace environments.
Paul Tonkin's work has been exhibited in the Hayward, Serpentine
and Whitechapel galleries and is represented in important private
collections.
