Local artists create public art for London 2012

> SkySCAPE further details

Lewisham Council has commissioned five creative organisations
and businesses in the borough to choose artists who will create temporary projects using a sporting champions podium and the
theme of ‘everyone’s a winner’.

Taking the podium out of the stadium and into an urban setting,
the artists will create their own artwork with a location to suit their theme. Work started at the beginning of the year and will be
revealed at top-secret unusual Lewisham locations in April 2012.

One of the installations by Bound for Glory (Zoe Hamilton-Peters
and Carlos Quiñones) has been photographed in progress.
Their work, based on a life-size hand-stitched consequences
game for children, allows the user to rotate different parts of an athlete’s body to achieve a mix, representing a range of sports.

Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham says: “We are delighted
to fund this exciting new art project that shows the huge amount
of creative talent we have in the borough. The concept of ‘everyone’s a winner’ will, I hope, have given the artists great
scope and I look forward to seeing the installations revealed and
the creativity it has inspired.”

The organisations and their selected artists working on the
podia project are:

Cash Aspeek and Chris Marshall

This project successfully gained a London 2012 Inspire mark, the
badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme, which recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012 Games.

Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the
Olympic Games and Paralympic games said: “We want to use the power of the Games to inspire change. The Inspire programme is recognising the work our partners all round the UK are doing to help
us achieve this vision now – one year away from the start of the games. I congratulate everyone involved in Podia for securing the Inspire mark and wish you every success with your work.”

Work in progress can be tracked at www.podia.org.uk along with more information about the project and the artists involved.
