EX ROMA VI: 4 Years of Abbey Artists at the British School at Rome

Abbey Awards is proud to present: EX ROMA VI: 4 Years of Abbey Artists at the British School at Rome. This exhibition reunites Abbey Fellows and Scholars in Painting, resident at the British School at Rome from 2020-2023, funded by the EA Abbey Memorial Scholarships (Abbey Awards). Abbey Awards offers all-expenses-paid residencies at the British School at Rome for four artists a year, selected from a competition open to UK and US artists and long-term residents of any nationality. Every four years, Abbey Alumni are invited to reconvene for an exhibition celebrating the special experience of living and working as an artist in the most fascinating city of the ancient and modern world.

Ex Roma VI showcases the vibrant and diverse practises of the artists in residence between 2020-2023, the range of formal responses arising in this distinctive environment, its challenges, discoveries and opportunities: 2020 Bea Bonafini, Jeff McMillan, Eleni Odysseos, Amber Doe, Jeffrey Dennis 2021 Claudio Pestana, Héloïse Delègue, Richard Burton 2022 Andro Semeiko-Antelidze, Luke Burton, Selma Parlour, Mark Joshua Epstein 2023 Tura Oliveira, Michael Coppelov, Lynn Fulton, Rafal Zajko APT Gallery, 6 Creekside, London SE8 4SA 5th-15th March 2026, Exhibition open Thurs-Sun 12-5 Private View: Thursday 5th March 6pm Gallery Talk: Sunday 15th March 3pm: Danny Rolph, Vanessa Jackson and Sacha Craddock in conversation with the artists. EA Abbey was an artist and key figure in the founding of the BSR. After his death in 1911 his widow provided funds from his legacy to build seven studio apartments at the BSR, which have accommodated all resident artists to this day. There has been an Abbey Scholar at the BSR almost without interruption since the 1920s, and in 1990 the Abbey Fellowships were established in their present form. The BSR studios house fine art practitioners alongside research scholars in Humanities, Social Sciences and Architecture, creating an inclusive multi-disciplinary community.
