An exhibition of sculpture by APT Members Margaret Higginson and Richard Lawrence.

An exhibition of sculpture by Margaret Higginson and Richard Lawrence. Both artists work in wood and stone, carving and constructing. The nature of the material, its makeup, its structure is important to both artist’s work. The grain of the wood, the vertical fibre that runs up the tree through the annual rings of growth, and the grain of the stone made from the crushed sea bed of millions of years, the fossils of ancient life, making up the horizontal strata. Materiality dictates the form; it guides the hand the tools and the eye. Ideas are important but the process is slow so ideas have to fuse and shape to the material.

Margaret hand carves wood and stone , utilising abstract shapes and growth rings that symbolise the passage of time and the stories embedded in natural materials. The subject of Richards Sculptures and prints are trees, animals and their habitat. Together, the artists create a thought-provoking dialogue about the beauty and vulnerability of nature, encouraging viewers to ponder their relationship with the environment.
