In the studio with… Victoria Rance

How long have you been at APT?
I joined in 1996, I think, so 26 years.

Describe APT in three words...
Communal, sheltering, beautiful.

What is your practice and how do you like to work in your studio?
I make sculpture, installation, drawings, animations, a big variety of work. It’s about the relationship between humans and the natural world using mythology, both from established myths and my own stories and characters. I love doing a variety of work in my studio and I also use the Creek wall daily to look at and record Creek life, drawing and painting. I often sit on the sofa I inherited from Marcus and from there paint and draw and write and sleep. I have lots of areas for different activities, like cutting, sanding, casting, polishing and just doing nothing.

Which artists have influenced you?
Of modern century artists both Louise Bourgeois and Pablo Picasso for their freedom to do whatever they wanted. And then Rembrandt and Kathie Kollwitz for their deep humanity. But most of all many many artists and craftspeople from across the world over thousands of years who made artworks without their names being recorded.

What is the most unusual thing someone might find in your studio?
A daisy chain from around 20 years ago. The other unusual things are too well hidden to be found…
