In the studio with… Paul Malone

How long have you been at APT?
Since the beginning in 1995.

Describe APT in three words...
Oasis, Independent, Ideas-testing

What is your practice and how do you like to work in your studio?
My education was based in sculpture but I consider myself multi-disciplinary. At the moment I am combining constructed installation with light projections and exploring the practice of model-making. These exemplify theories of natural philosophy especially in the field of astronomy and of the physics of the pre-Einstein era.

I use my studio mainly for construction and testing out how installations will work. As my work embraces cosmological and metaphysical conceits I try to ground it by using common everyday materials and items scavenged from bins. The space itself oscillates between minimalism and having clutter around to inspire play.

My movie camera is my sketchbook.

Which artists have influenced you?
Nevin Aladag, Hale Tenger, Mika Rottenberg, Neil Beloufa, Erkka Nissinen, Peter Gidal and any one else who’s artwork brings a smile to my face.

What is the most unusual thing someone might find in your studio?
Iridescent dog chews and cat teasers for my next installation.
